The aim of this video is to provide essential patient information to prepare you for your experience of radiotherapy treatments for breast cancer. This informative video is produced by Radiotherapy UK and Vertual Ltd.

How to prepare for radiotherapy - including information on Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH)

Click on the image to access the Respire website.  This website contains a series of resources developed from a partnership between healthcare professionals and patient representatives. The resources are designed for patients who have been referred for radiotherapy to the breast or chest wall following a breast cancer diagnosis. The aim of the resources is to help patients prepare for radiotherapy. The website has four pages containing information on the following:

  • Coming for radiotherapy planning, what to expect, and how to prepare for the breath-hold technique if you have been advised you need to do this during radiotherapy
  • Information on breast or trunk lymphoedema which is a possible side effect of breast cancer treatment
  • Information on how to care for your skin before, during and after radiotherapy
  • Someone like you, on this page patients that have been through radiotherapy following a breast cancer diagnosis talk through their real life experiences and give top tips on what they found helpful as they completed their treatment.

We have free services that will give them the support they need in the way they want.

 Future Dreams Breast Cancer Charity believes nobody should face breast cancer alone or without hope. We offers a wide range of in-person and online services providing practical, emotional and psychological support for those diagnosed with breast cancer. No referrals needed. We also fund vital research and promote breast health awareness.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a Patient Information Forum TICK accredited (PIF TICK Certification | Patient Information Forum) website. This website gives information about radiotherapy and the side-effects, including the impact on sex life and fertility. It provides information in other languages and formats such as British Sign Language and easy read information.


The NHS website gives an overview of radiotherapy and some of the  side effects. There is also a video explaining what happens during radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy UK is a Patient Information Forum TICK accredited ( PIF TICK Certification | Patient Information Forum) Patients and Families online hub. Learn more about your pathway through radiotherapy treatment, your treatment team, side effects and late-effects of radiotherapy, and get helpful ideas on questions to ask so you feel empowered to understand your treatment. Browse patient stories and soak in information that has been approved by patients and clinicians, all in your own time and in the comfort of your own home.
